‘I’ll defeat Tinubu in 2027, end election rigging’ — Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, says he is confident of defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election if he secures the ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking on an X Spaces discussion on Saturday, the former Rivers State governor declared that he has never engaged in election rigging and has consistently declined appointments to serve on the All Progressives Congress (APC) election planning committees.

“I know Tinubu very well — his strengths and weaknesses. If given the ADC ticket, I will defeat him,” Amaechi said. “I challenge any politician, living or dead, to say I was part of rigging.”

He alleged that election malpractice in Nigeria often involves state governors and the diversion of public funds through government agencies, adding that he will expose more details if he wins the ADC primaries.

Amaechi insisted his administration would prioritise ending electoral fraud if elected president. “I will never participate in rigging, and I will stop it going forward,” he said, adding that he would only apologise if proven guilty of wrongdoing.

The former minister also acknowledged that Labour Party candidate Peter Obi won the 2023 presidential election in Rivers State, although the final results declared otherwise.

Amaechi recently stated he is ready to serve only one term if elected in 2027, in line with Nigeria’s informal rotational presidency arrangement between the North and South.
