Increase in flash flood due to rise in Atlantic Ocean, Lagos Lagoon — Commissioner

By Adeola Ogunrinde –

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has attributed the recent flash flooding in parts of the state to rising tidal levels from the Atlantic Ocean and the Lagos Lagoon.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Wahab explained that the natural phenomenon, known as “lock up,” occurs when high tides temporarily prevent rainwater from discharging into the sea. As a result, stormwater backs up and causes flash floods in low-lying areas.

He assured residents that once the tide recedes, usually within one to two hours after the rain stops, the floodwater will naturally drain off without additional intervention.

Wahab urged Lagosians to remain calm and avoid panic, noting that the state’s emergency response and drainage maintenance teams are actively monitoring the situation.

He emphasized the need for proper waste disposal, warning that dumping waste into drains and gutters blocks water flow and worsens flooding in affected areas.

“Proper waste disposal is a civic responsibility we must all uphold to ensure a flood-resilient Lagos,” Wahab said. “Let’s continue to work together for a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment.”
