INEC shifts Osun governorship election to August 15, 2026

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the rescheduling of the 2026 Osun State governorship election from Saturday, August 8, to Saturday, August 15, 2026.

In a press statement issued by the Public Affairs Officer of INEC Osun, Musa Olurode, the commission said the decision followed an official directive from its national headquarters in Abuja.

INEC stated that while some activities outlined in the timetable for the election had already been successfully conducted, the remaining processes would be carried out in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.

The commission noted that the new date aligns with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act, 2026.

Reassuring political parties, stakeholders, and the electorate, INEC said the shift in date would not affect its commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible, inclusive, and transparent poll.

The commission emphasised that the successful conduct of the forthcoming election remains a collective responsibility.

Meanwhile, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, called on political parties, candidates, security agencies, the media, civil society organisations, and voters to continue cooperating with the commission to ensure a peaceful election that reflects the will of the people.
