INSECURITY: 45,000 shops reopen in Onitsha, 62 criminal camps dismantled — Soludo

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State says his administration has dismantled more than 62 criminal camps as part of efforts to strengthen security across the state.

Soludo made the disclosure on Wednesday while speaking to State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu alongside entrepreneur and philanthropist, Emeka Offor at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The governor said his government has intensified security operations since he assumed office, stressing that criminal elements would not be allowed to operate within the state.

“Since I came into office, about 62 criminal camps have been dismantled in Anambra, and we’re not resting for one second,” he said, adding that the state now ranks among the safest in the country.

To bolster security, Soludo said his administration established a vigilante outfit known as Agunechemba, alongside an anti-cult task force and an anti-touting body. According to him, the groups are working collaboratively and have been effective in curbing criminal activities.

He cited improved security during the last Christmas season, noting that heavy traffic across the state reflected increased public confidence and a return of residents and visitors.

Addressing questions on whether security concerns prompted his visit to the president, Soludo said the meeting covered broader issues and was not specifically about security.

However, the governor noted that with the apparent easing of the sit-at-home in Anambra, commercial activities have rebounded. He disclosed that over 45,000 shops reopened on Monday at the Onitsha Main Market, with traders resuming business amid what he described as widespread jubilation.
