The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has commended the successful conduct of the local government election in Ondo State, describing it as a triumph for democracy and grassroots governance.
The elections were held on Saturday across the state’s 18 local government areas. While many lauded the process, some criticized it for low voter turnout.
Despite the criticism, the Minister praised the process for its peaceful execution and the maturity displayed by the electorate.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Alao Babatunde, the Minister congratulated the winners of the election and praised other contestants for their courage and sportsmanship.
“The successful conduct of the local government election in Ondo State is a victory for our people and democracy,” Tunji-Ojo stated. “This election is a testament to the growing maturity of our democratic institutions and the unwavering commitment of Ondo State citizens to grassroots governance.”
He urged the newly elected officials to prioritize delivering the benefits of local government autonomy, facilitated by the Federal Government, directly to the people.
“In every election, there will always be winners, but this election is a victory for all — no victor, no vanquished,” he added. “I commend the peaceful conduct of the electorate and the professionalism displayed by the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) and security agencies.”
The Minister also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast commitment to deepening democracy nationwide and applauded Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for creating an environment conducive to a free, fair, and credible electoral process.
