IReV publishes results, does not conduct e-voting — Senate

The Senate has clarified that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) is not an electronic voting platform.

Chairman of the Senate ad hoc committee reviewing the 2026 Electoral Bill, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, made the clarification during an appearance on Arise News on Thursday. He dismissed claims that lawmakers had scrapped the portal ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the Senate never resolved to discontinue the use of IReV, stressing that the platform is designed to publish results that have already been manually counted and declared at polling units.

He explained that IReV is software developed by INEC to make polling unit results public, not to conduct electronic voting. He noted that Nigeria has yet to adopt an e-voting system.

“People need to understand what real-time means. Real-time transmission can only happen if INEC adopts an e-voting system. For now, INEC does not have the capability for e-voting,” he said.

He added that votes in Nigeria are still cast and counted manually at polling units, with the final figures recorded on Form EC8A before being uploaded to the IReV portal.

The lawmaker, who represents Ondo Central, said the ongoing review of the electoral bill is aimed at harmonising differing views and addressing grey areas in the law, rather than eliminating the use of the portal.

He urged the media to exercise caution in reporting legislative proceedings on electoral reforms, warning that misinterpretations could unnecessarily trigger public controversy.
