The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has joined the global community to celebrate International Women’s Day 2026, emphasising the need for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The association noted that the theme, “Rights, Justice, Action, For All Women and Girls,” highlights the critical role women play in building strong families, vibrant communities, and sustainable national development in a secure environment. It also stressed the urgent need to address social, cultural, and institutional barriers limiting women’s access to justice and opportunities.

In a statement signed by the its chairperson, Comrade Abisola Ariwodola, and the secretary, Oluwaranti Ojewumi, the association said that empowering women is not only a matter of fairness and equality but also a strategic pathway to economic growth, social stability, and inclusive governance.

The association urged stakeholders to support the passage of the Special Seats Bill (HB1349) currently before the National Assembly, which seeks to increase women’s representation in governance.

While celebrating the resilience, achievements, and contributions of women across various sectors, the association called on governments to intensify efforts toward policies and programmes that promote women’s empowerment and ensure enhanced security for a safe environment.

They also commended the government of Governor Ademola Adeleke and called for the creation of more opportunities for women in leadership, governance, entrepreneurship, technology, education, skills development, and a safe society, noting that when women are empowered, communities benefit and thrive.

Osun NAWOJ further stressed the importance of support systems that ensure women’s access to quality education, healthcare, business opportunities, and infrastructure, while also protecting them against gender-based violence.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights, welfare, protection, and advancement of women, while continuing to use its platform to amplify the voices and issues affecting women and children, irrespective of class or status.
