The highly anticipated 20th edition of the continental film awards ceremony, the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), took place at a packed venue on Saturday, November 2, 2024.
The board of the Africa Film Academy (AFA), the organizers of the AMAA, held the 2024 edition with much pomp and glee at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Ikeja, GRA.
The five-hour-long awards ceremony was co-produced by Kingsley James and Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe in Lagos, Nigeria.
With over 700 guests from across Africa converging at the venue, a total of 26 awards were presented to African film practitioners, including actors, cinematographers, producers, costumiers, set designers, and more.
Some of the biggest winners of the night included Nigeria’s Daniel Oriahi for the film The Weekend, Femi Adebayo for Jagun Jagun, and South Africa’s Jahmil X.T. Qubeka for The Queenstown Kings.
AMAA’s CEO, Dr. Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, reiterated the need for African creatives to remain united while leveraging platforms like AMAA as springboards to global fame. Dr. Anyiam-Osigwe also promised that the AFA would continue the legacy of the late Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, who had a profound impact on the African film industry before her passing.
He noted that preparations for the 20th edition began before her death and assured that the family would sustain the partnerships established since the inception of the awards.
Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musawa, led a notable list of dignitaries that included captains of industry and film practitioners from across Africa and beyond.
The evening featured breathtaking performances from legendary Afrobeat star Femi Kuti and Yinka Davies. The night was further enlivened by other Pan-African artists, including Narh Tettey, Bedwei Kwaku, and Adina Thembi.
Guests and attendees couldn’t get enough of Femi Kuti and Yinka Davies, whose stellar performances set the tone for what became an unforgettable night.
