Judicial activities to halt as Ondo officers commence strike Monday

By Boye Oyeyemi –
Judicial activities in Ondo State are set to be disrupted as magistrates, presidents of Grade ‘A’ customary courts and legal research officers will commence an indefinite strike from Monday, January 5, 2026.
The decision was announced by the Coalition of Magistrates, Presidents of Grade ‘A’ Customary Courts and Legal Research Officers within the state judiciary.
In a notice issued on January 2, 2026, the coalition directed all its members to withdraw their services indefinitely in protest against unresolved issues bordering on judicial autonomy and welfare.
The directive was jointly signed by the chairman of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Ondo State Branch; the chairman of the Association of Presidents of Grade ‘A’ Customary Courts; and the acting chairman of the Association of Legal Research Officers.
“We hereby direct all our members to commence strike action indefinitely with effect from Monday, 5 January 2026,” the notice read.
However, members were warned against performing any official duties during the strike, including court sittings, signing or issuing documents, or carrying out any judicial function, whether physically or remotely.
“This strike action shall remain in force until our collective demands for judicial autonomy and improved welfare are fully achieved. We will not compromise on these fundamental principles,” the notice added.
