JUST IN: Defection – I’m expecting more to come, Tinubu says

President Bola Tinubu has welcomed members of opposition parties to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying more defections are expected.
The president made this statement on Thursday while delivering his address at the APC National Summit themed “Renewed Hope Agenda: The Journey So Far.”
Tinubu emphasized that political realignment is constitutionally protected under the freedom of association, as outlined in Section 41(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
He made the remarks in response to the recent wave of defections by prominent political figures, particularly from the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Western Post reported that in April 2025, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and other top PDP officials defected to the APC. Vice President Kashim Shettima described the development as a “political tsunami,” noting its significance in the South-South region.
