President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The ceremony took place on Monday, following her confirmation by the Senate on September 25, 2024.

Kekere-Ekun took the oath of office and signed the oath register at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.

She succeeds Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who assumed office on June 27, 2022, and retired on August 22, 2024, upon reaching the retirement age of 70.

Monday’s ceremony was attended by three of Kekere-Ekun’s predecessors: the first female CJN, Justice Aloma Mukhtar; Justice Mahmud Mohammed; and Justice Walter Onnoghen, along with her immediate predecessor, Justice Ariwoola.

Also present in the chamber were members of her family and other justices of the Supreme Court.

Kekere-Ekun is taking the oath of office for the second time in five weeks. On August 23, before her Senate confirmation, President Tinubu swore her in as Acting Chief Justice.
