JUST IN: US warns citizens to avoid govt, military sites in Abuja

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning its citizens to steer clear of non-essential travel to military and government facilities in Abuja.

The advisory, released on Monday, comes amid heightened global security concerns and ongoing tensions in several regions. While no specific threat was mentioned in the alert, the Mission urged American nationals in Nigeria to exercise increased caution, especially in and around the Federal Capital Territory.

“The U.S. Embassy is closely monitoring the situation and recommends that American citizens avoid non-essential visits to government buildings and military sites in Abuja until further notice,” the statement said.

The alert also advised U.S. citizens to maintain a high level of personal security awareness, review their travel plans, and follow local news and instructions from Nigerian authorities.

This development follows recent warnings by other Western missions globally, citing elevated risks due to international geopolitical developments.

The U.S. Mission further reminded its citizens of existing travel restrictions and the importance of registering with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive timely security updates and emergency assistance.
