Kaduna targets 22,435 hectares for land restoration under ACReSAL
Kaduna State Government has identified 22,435 hectares of degraded land for restoration under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
Governor Uba Sani disclosed this at the ACReSAL mid-term review meeting held in Kaduna, where he was represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Abubakar Buba.
He said the state deployed advanced geospatial mapping technologies to identify and delineate degraded areas, ensuring that restoration efforts are targeted and effective.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at rehabilitating damaged ecosystems, enhancing agricultural productivity, and improving livelihoods in affected communities.
Sani added that the state is complementing the programme with livelihood support initiatives, noting that over 500 women, youths and school feeding vendors have been trained in biomass briquette production as an alternative to firewood.
He also revealed that more than 160 kilometres of drainage channels have been desilted to mitigate flooding and improve environmental conditions in urban areas.
The governor further disclosed that Kaduna has developed a 10-year climate change policy to institutionalise sustainability and guide long-term environmental planning, while calling for stronger collaboration among stakeholders.
Earlier, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, described the mid-term review as a vital platform to assess progress, while other stakeholders, including officials from the agriculture and water resources ministries and development partners, urged accelerated implementation to achieve the project’s goals.
