Kano Government clarifies Appeal Court judgment on Emir Sanusi’s reinstatement

The Kano State Government has clarified the recent Court of Appeal judgment concerning the ongoing emirship dispute, addressing widespread misinterpretations in the media.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Governor Abba Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, explained that the judgment delivered on January 10, 2025, upheld the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law, 2019, and overturned the ruling of the Federal High Court in Kano.
At a press briefing held at the NUJ Secretariat in Kano, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, emphasized the importance of accurate reporting on the legal proceedings.
Dederi noted that while the Court of Appeal’s decision remains valid and binding, Alhaji Aminu Dan’agundi has filed an appeal before the Supreme Court.
He further explained that the stay of execution granted by the Court of Appeal was a standard legal procedure to maintain the status quo until the Supreme Court makes a final ruling.
The Kano State Government urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that its legal team is studying the case’s outcome to determine the next course of action.
Dederi also expressed the government’s appreciation to the people of Kano for their patience, understanding, and prayers for peace and progress in the state.
