Keyamo orders probe into Akure Airport breach, assures public of safety

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has ordered a full investigation into the recent security breach at Akure Airport, while assuring Nigerians that the facility was not the target of any attack.

Keyamo noted that the incident, which sparked public concern, resulted from individuals fleeing a separate security threat who gained access through a weak section of the airport’s perimeter fence.

He explained that the breach was not a deliberate attempt to compromise airport operations, stressing that passengers and aviation activities were never at risk.

“The incident stemmed from an external security situation, not a direct attempt to breach aviation operations, as those involved were believed to have entered through a vulnerable section of the perimeter fence while fleeing a threat,” the minister said.

Conflicting reports had earlier emerged over the development, with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) stating that four suspected bandits were arrested near the airport, while the Ondo State Police Command maintained that only two suspected accomplices to kidnappers were apprehended outside the facility.

The minister attributed the discrepancies to communication gaps within government channels, noting that early reports can sometimes vary as information passes through multiple layers.

He acknowledged that the incident exposed vulnerabilities in airport infrastructure, particularly damaged perimeter fencing, and directed aviation and security agencies to harmonise their findings as part of the ongoing probe.

Keyamo also announced a nationwide review of airport fencing and security systems, warning that any lapses in duty would attract sanctions while assuring the public that Nigeria’s aviation sector remains safe.
