King Charles backs Nigeria’s leadership in Commonwealth, pledges stronger UK partnership

King Charles III has expressed strong support for Nigeria’s growing influence within the Commonwealth of Nations, saying the United Kingdom looks forward to standing alongside the country as a trusted partner in building a shared future.
Speaking during a state banquet at Windsor Castle in honour of President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, the British monarch emphasised Nigeria’s strategic importance to the Commonwealth and global cooperation.
The King said he and Camilla, Queen of the United Kingdom were encouraged by Nigeria’s growing role in the international alliance.
“In achieving that, my wife and I will gain strength from seeing Nigeria take her rightful place at the heart of the Commonwealth and to standing alongside you as a friend, who believes the future is best when built together,” he said.
King Charles described Nigeria as an economic and cultural powerhouse whose leadership brings both responsibility and opportunity in an increasingly interconnected world.
He referenced President Tinubu’s earlier remarks on the value of the Commonwealth as a global alliance of 56 member states with a combined population of about 2.7 billion people, stressing that such cooperation is vital in times of global uncertainty.
The monarch noted that stronger friendship among member states would help reinforce the Commonwealth’s relevance in addressing shared economic and security challenges.
He also underscored the importance of expanding intra-Commonwealth trade by creating shared standards, regulatory and digital alignment, and removing barriers that deter investment. The King cited the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership as a practical example of this approach, which supports economic growth and job creation for citizens of both countries.
“As we look towards the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting this year, I hope far from being past its time we can demonstrate that the Commonwealth’s time has come,” the King said.
