The Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Kim Pankyu, has praised the growth and development of Taekwondo in Nigeria and pledged further support for the Nigerian Taekwondo Federation.
He gave this assurance over the weekend in Abuja during the 12th edition of the Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Tournament, where over 200 athletes competed for honors.
“As you know, Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art loved by many people around the world. Not only does Taekwondo enhance physical strength, but it also disciplines the mind and soul.
“Taekwondo encourages competition, while also teaching fairness and respect. These aspects have helped Taekwondo become a global sport. I am proud to see the growing popularity of Taekwondo in Nigeria.
“The Ambassador’s Championship is part of our efforts to promote Taekwondo in Nigeria. It also aims to help Nigerian athletes improve their skills so they can compete on the global stage.
“We will continue to support Nigeria in achieving success at the world stage,” the ambassador stated.
In his remarks, the President of the Africa Taekwondo Union, Mr. Ide Issaka, also expressed satisfaction with the progress of the sport in Nigeria. He announced that the Union has decided to upgrade the Korean Ambassador Taekwondo Cup Championship, which has existed for the past twelve years, to a G1 ranking tournament in Africa, allowing other African countries to participate.
