Kwankwaso debunks defection rumours, says consultations still ongoing
Former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has debunked defection rumours, insisting that consultations on his political future are still ongoing within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement on Saturday titled “Clarification on My Political Position”, Kwankwaso described recent media reports suggesting a political realignment within the ADC as misleading, stressing that no final decision had been taken.
He noted that developments within the party, including recent court judgments, have created uncertainty, but maintained that consultations were ongoing with key political stakeholders.
Kwankwaso referenced the Supreme Court ruling which affirmed the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee but remitted parts of the matter to a lower court, describing the situation as one that has left the party in a difficult position.
According to him, the legal challenges informed the need for broad consultations with political actors, including leaders from other parties, to determine the next steps.
“I have always placed national interest and party unity above personal ambition. Any speculation about a presidential declaration is premature and unfounded,” Kwankwaso said.
He added that his absence from recent ADC stakeholders’ meetings was due to personal commitments, which were duly communicated, assuring that any official position would be announced through proper channels at the appropriate time.
Speculations had linked him to a possible joint presidential ticket with former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, while reports also suggested plans to leave the ADC for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) amid uncertainty over the party’s ticket.
