Kwankwaso warns NNPP members against defecting to APC

By Kunle Sanni –

Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State and national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has cautioned party members against political betrayal, warning that defection has historically led to failure.

Kwankwaso issued the warning while addressing supporters in Kano amid growing speculation that some NNPP members are considering switching allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

On Sunday, supporters under the banner of the Kwankwasiyya Movement disclosed plans to possibly defect to the APC, arguing that the move would improve Kwankwaso’s chances in a future presidential race. Abdullahi Rogo, director-general of the protocol directorate at the Kano State Government House, who spoke on behalf of the group, said the proposed defection was in the best interest of Kano State.

Rogo added that the group had appealed to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and Kwankwaso to lead them into the APC.

Reacting at the event, Kwankwaso acknowledged awareness of the reported moves but dismissed them as the actions of a few individuals. He warned that history had shown that betrayal does not lead to lasting political success.

“I am aware that a few, very few of you have decided to cross to the other side; don’t worry, whoever knows them should advise them,” Kwankwaso said.

“Nobody in this country or elsewhere has ever succeeded with betrayal. If you are in doubt, look at our history from 1999 till date. All those who betrayed this group have never succeeded.”
