Kwara Govt clarifies vehicle restrictions on Ahmadu Bello Way
By Mosunmola Ayobami, Ilorin
The Kwara State Government has clarified that mini-shuttle buses, taxis, and ride-hailing vehicles are permitted to operate on Ahmadu Bello Way, a key road hosting the Government House, various Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), security installations, and other facilities.
This information was disclosed in a statement by the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Engr. Abdulquawiy Olododo, on Wednesday.
“This clarification is necessary for public awareness,” Olododo stated. “However, tricycles, motorcycles, and heavy-duty trucks are not permitted on this road. The restriction is driven by security concerns and aims to improve public order in the area.”
The announcement follows a prior notice issued on Friday, November 8, 2024, by the Ministry of Works and Transport, which restricted certain types of vehicles from using Ahmadu Bello Way in GRA, Ilorin. The Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) has been directed to enforce these restrictions immediately.
The Ministry has begun erecting restriction signs along key points from Challenge through Ahmadu Bello Way, notifying the public of the changes. According to Hon. Abdulquawiy Olododo, Ahmadu Bello Way serves as an access route to the Government House, and these signs will restrict access for motorcycles, tricycles, and certain commercial and heavy-duty vehicles.
KWARTMA’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bamidele Michael, emphasized that the new restriction signs support existing “No Parking” signage to enhance safety and security. He also cautioned traders to avoid conducting business on pedestrian walkways, particularly in areas such as Ojaoba, Gambari, Ita-Amodu, Agaka, Adifa, Balogun Fulani, Emir’s Road, Post Office to Challenge, and Murtala Muhammed Way, as road encroachment poses significant dangers.
Michael further warned that the incidence of driving against traffic (one-way) has increased, and any driver found guilty of this will face legal sanctions. Violating the new “Not Allowed” restriction signs on Ahmadu Bello Way will result in a fine of N50,000, with additional measures to ensure compliance.
He urged the public to cooperate with the State Government to create safer road conditions for the benefit of all.
