Kwara lawmakers advocate for medical emergency preparedness in hotels

Lawmakers in the Kwara State House of Assembly have emphasized the need to establish partnerships between hotels and hospitals to address medical emergencies effectively.
In a motion titled “On the Need to Establish Partnerships with Hospitals on Medical Emergencies in Hotels in Kwara State” (KWHAM 38), Hon. Rukayat Motunrayo Shittu (Owode/Onire) presented the proposal during Tuesday’s plenary session in Ilorin. The motion was seconded by Hon. Ganiyu Folabi Salahu (Omupo).
While leading the debate, Hon. Shittu highlighted the crucial role of the hotel industry in Kwara State’s socio-economic development. She noted its contributions to employment creation, entrepreneurship, revenue generation, cultural exchange, and community development through events and tourism.
However, she raised concerns about a critical gap in the provision of standardized emergency healthcare services in hotels. She pointed out that the lack of such services compromises guests’ safety and well-being, exposing them to potential health risks during emergencies such as heart attacks, injuries, or sudden illnesses.
Hon. Shittu commended the Kwara State Government for its efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure, ensuring that quality services are accessible across the state.
She noted the establishment of government-approved hospitals and facilities in all areas of Kwara as a positive development.
Resolutions Adopted:
- The Assembly urged the Governor to direct the Ministry of Health to design a health delivery structure facilitating partnerships between healthcare providers and hotels.
- Hotels, lodges, and guesthouses across the state were called upon to establish formal collaborations with nearby hospitals, clinics, or emergency medical service providers.
- Hotels were mandated to provide visible and easily accessible emergency medical contact details in rooms and at reception areas.
- The Ministries of Communication and Health were tasked with monitoring compliance through routine inspections, with non-compliant establishments to face legal action, including suspension of operational licenses.
