In compliance with the directive of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the management of Kwara State Polytechnic has announced the unbundling of its Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in Mass Communication and Computer Science. These two popular programmes, previously offered as combined courses in polytechnics and monotechnics nationwide, will now be offered separately.
The decision, aimed at enhancing the quality and relevance of technical education, will take effect from the 2024/2025 academic session.
Speaking on the development, the Rector, Engr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, explained that the need to meet the demands of the global information, communication, and technology industries, as well as the desire to produce graduates with specialized knowledge and skills, necessitated the unbundling of these programmes.
He added that the unbundling would allow students to delve deeper into their chosen fields and develop the specific skills sought by employers.
The Rector also clarified that with this change, Mass Communication and Computer Science will no longer exist as combined programmes at the HND level.
In a related development, the Rector has approved the appointment of new heads for the newly created departments. Mr. Yissa Idris Olohuntoyin will head Journalism and Media Studies, Mr. Opaleke Enoch Abimbola will oversee Strategic Communication and Media Studies, Dr. (Mrs.) Dada O. M. will lead Networking and Cloud Computing, while Mr. Olajide Anthony Taiwo will be in charge of Software and Web Development.
Meanwhile, Mr. Fatiu Olohungbebe and Mr. Oluwafemi Oyedepo will remain the heads of the Mass Communication and Computer Science departments, respectively, at the National Diploma (ND) level, as well as oversee the final HND 2 cohorts of the two departments.
The Rector assured that all necessary resources and support will be provided to the new departments to ensure the effective implementation of the new programmes.
