The Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Abiodun Ayodele Adebara, on Thursday inaugurated two sets of local government election petition tribunals ahead of the upcoming September 21 local government elections in the state.
Each tribunal consists of three members, led by two chairmen, tasked with adjudicating any disputes that may arise from the election process.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Justice Adebara urged the panel members to expedite the resolution of election-related cases, emphasizing the significance of election petitions in maintaining public confidence in the democratic process.
He highlighted the importance of timely and fair adjudication, noting that election tribunals help to ease tensions and provide a legal avenue for addressing election disputes.
“It is a requirement of the rule of law and part of the democratic process that after any election, an election tribunal is set up to resolve disputes. The institution of an election tribunal has always helped to calm anxieties and defuse tensions,” the Chief Judge stated.
Justice Adebara expressed confidence in the integrity and competence of the selected tribunal members, all of whom are officers of proven track records within the state’s judiciary. He assured that the tribunal would operate impartially, without fear or favor.
The Chief Judge also addressed the absence of members of the Bar on the tribunal, clarifying that this decision was not intended as a slight but assured that they would be included in future considerations.
He urged legal practitioners appearing before the tribunal to uphold professionalism and excellence, reminding them of their shared responsibility in the administration of justice.
In addition, Justice Adebara announced the establishment of an Election Registry at the High Court Complex to assist with election-related matters.
In his response, Chief Magistrate Jibril Bio Salihu, speaking on behalf of the tribunal members, expressed gratitude for their selection and pledged to diligently fulfill their duties, assuring the state judiciary of their commitment to justice.
