Kwara to inject N20bn for public school overhaul
By Mosunmola Ayobami, Ilorin –
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has directed that N20 billion be allocated in the supplementary budget for the further revamp of school infrastructure across the state.
According to a statement issued on Monday in Ilorin, the move is aimed at strengthening the ongoing infrastructural upgrade in public schools, which began in 2020 after the state reestablished its partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
“His Excellency has instructed that we dedicate another N20 billion to school infrastructural upgrades. The process has already started. The designs are being prepared, and we will begin implementation as soon as the supplementary budget is approved,” the statement read.
Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, said the administration is proud to have implemented SUBEB-UBEC school intervention projects dating as far back as 2014, a feat he described as unique to Governor AbdulRazaq’s administration.
He explained that the new investment is not a standalone effort but a continuation of the administration’s commitment to scaling up infrastructure across the education sector. He noted that more than 1,254 classrooms had been worked on between 2019 and now, alongside other special interventions.
Olohungbebe added that the new round of projects would include laboratories and sanitation facilities and would target schools across different parts of the state, complementing ongoing efforts by SUBEB.
He acknowledged that despite the scale of previous interventions, infrastructure gaps still exist. “That is exactly why His Excellency is approving another special intervention — to further close those gaps,” the commissioner said.
