Lagos agency sensitises staff on curbing gender-based violence
In a demonstration of the commitment of the Lagos State Government to build the right mindset amongst its employees, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), in collaboration with USAID/LUWASH, has organised a one-day sensitisation programme on curbing Gender-Based Violence for its staff.
Speaking at the programme held at the LSWMO’s Office in Ikeja, the General Manager, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, while welcoming the participants and USAID/LUWASH officials to the event, emphasised that progressive support and collaboration on the menace of GBV can make a difference and help create a safer, more equitable society for everyone.
He stated that Gender-Based Violence is a prevalent issue affecting individuals, families and communities globally, which is also a violation of human rights that demands collective responsibility to bring it to an end.
Afolabi informed that, as the Agency at the forefront of ensuring sustainable and safe wastewater management in the State, officials of LSMWO are its greatest assets, and as such, they must be protected from harassment, discrimination and abuse that can occur within the workplace or the home front.
The General Manager added that workplace harassment, bullying and other forms of misconduct can have serious consequences for employees, including emotional distress, decreased productivity and even physical harm. He, therefore, emphasised that the Agency has a zero-tolerance policy for any form of misconduct while committed to providing a safe and supportive work environment for all employees.
One of the Speakers from USAID/LUWASH and a focal person on Gender-Based Violence, Mrs. Stella Abah said it is important for everyone to note that emotional torture can be very destructive whether at home or the office, and it is no longer a secret that GBV in common around the world.
The USAID/LUWASH facilitator, Dr. Jurbe Godep said the programme theme: “Strengthening, Safeguarding End to Gender-Based Violence”, is apt and timely.
He explained that the campaign is aimed at raising awareness about Gender-Based Violence both at home and in the office environment to galvanise action to prevent and end this unwanted practice.
