Lagos APC berates Sowore over planned ‘Release Nnamdi Kanu’ protest
The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has berated human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, over his planned “Release Nnamdi Kanu” protest, describing his actions as a “political theatre” and a “quest for cheap popularity.”
In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s spokesman, Seye Oladejo, the APC said Sowore’s involvement in the agitation for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was both “baffling and laughable,” adding that he had no cultural or political connection to the South East.
Oladejo accused Sowore of seeking attention through national controversies, saying, “It is sheer mockery—and an insult to a people of deep intellect, courage, and history—for him to imagine that he can speak for or lead Ndigbo at this time and age.”
The APC spokesman questioned the activist’s motive, asking why Sowore was “weeping more than the bereaved” over a matter that is already before a competent court. He said it was hypocritical for someone who often preaches democracy and rule of law to incite protests on a judicial issue still under trial.
According to Oladejo, “This contradiction exposes his activism as a theatre of convenience—noisy, shallow, and opportunistic.”
He maintained that the Igbo people are capable of defining and defending their own interests without external interference, stressing that Sowore’s attempts to champion their cause amount to “social media dramatics.”
Oladejo further cautioned that issues before the court should not be “tried on the streets or debated on livestreams,” insisting that only the rule of law can guarantee lasting justice and order.
“The APC government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains steadfastly committed to these principles,” he added.
Concluding, the party urged Nigerians to disregard Sowore’s “circus of attention-seeking,” saying, “He should stop playing the town crier of a village that never sent him on any errand.”
