Lagos Assembly concludes Makoko demolition probe

The Lagos State House of Assembly ad-hoc committee set up by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has concluded its investigation into the demolition of structures in Makoko, Sogunro and Oko-Agbon communities, as affected residents presented divergent demands.

At the committee’s final meeting on Thursday, March 5, 2026, representatives of the three communities expressed differing views on compensation and relocation for those impacted by the demolition.

The Alase of the Egun Community in Makoko, Francis Agoyon, said displaced residents should be permanently relocated rather than compensated financially. The Baale of Makoko also supported relocation but urged the government to clearly state the proposed site and define the exact boundaries of the affected areas.

In contrast, representatives of Sogunro community demanded financial compensation, proposing that each affected resident receive about ₦10 million, noting that the average bamboo house in the area costs around ₦4 million.

Vice Chairman of the Fishermen Association, Tobi, said the situation had created tension among residents, adding that many were uncertain about the final outcome. “The people are jittery. Whatever the traditional rulers decide will be the final position,” he said.

Responding, Majority Leader Noheem Adams expressed concern over what he described as shifting positions by community representatives, recalling that they had initially agreed on compensation before changing their stance.

Adams said the committee would present its findings and the communities’ submissions to the Speaker and the 40-member Assembly for further deliberation.

During the meeting, officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency disclosed that some demolished structures had been rebuilt and sought approval to remove them, a move endorsed by leaders of the three communities.
