Lagos Assembly condemns murder of Prince Kazeem Akinloye, calls for urgent investigation

The Lagos State House of Assembly has condemned the murder of Prince Kazeem Ademola Akinloye, the first son of the Ojomu of Ajiran land, Oba Tijani Akinloye, describing the incident as “one too many.”

The Assembly called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to swiftly launch an investigation into the tragic incident to ensure justice for the bereaved family.

During Tuesday’s plenary, the House held a minute of silence in memory of Prince Akinloye, who was brutally shot and stabbed to death on August 26, 2024, along Chevron Drive in the Lekki area of Lagos. The Assembly also resolved to send a formal condolence letter to the Ojomu royal family.

Raising the matter under “Matters of Urgent Public Importance,” Majority Leader Hon. Noheem Adams brought the horrific murder of Prince Akinloye to the attention of his colleagues, urging the House to advocate for a thorough investigation.

Echoing Adams’ sentiments, Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Ademola Richard Kasunmu emphasized the need for the state’s security agencies to step up their efforts, noting that the incident highlights the rising security challenges in Lagos.

Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2) recalled a similar case involving the murder of Mr. Sheriff Ishola Salami, which occurred in the same vicinity just months prior. He stressed the importance of unraveling the mystery behind both killings, while praying for the repose of their souls.

Hon. Adewale Temitope (Ifako-Ijaiye I) also expressed concern over the rising insecurity in Lagos, urging the government to reinforce the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps to enhance local security efforts. “Though the security agencies are doing their best, it is clear they are not as effective as we need them to be,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hon. Ladi Ajomale (Oshodi-Isolo II) revealed that the Assembly had initially begun investigating the murder of Sheriff Salami but later deferred to the police for further inquiry.

In her remarks, Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, who presided over the session in the absence of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, called on the Lagos State Police Command to prioritize the investigation.

She also recommended that security be provided at the Ojomu palace to prevent any possible intimidation while the case is ongoing.
