Lagos Assembly pledges support for Nigerian army in maintaining peace
The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army in maintaining peace across the state.
He made this pledge during a visit by Brigadier General Olawale Matthew Oyekola, Commander of the 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, to the Assembly on Thursday.
During the meeting, Dr. Obasa assured the military of the Assembly’s readiness to collaborate for the continued stability of Lagos. He emphasized that the legislature, consisting of 40 lawmakers, is dedicated to ensuring peace and security in all local government areas within the state.
“I want to assure you of our total support. Our arms are wide open. When you need us, all you have to do is just call on us. We are at the House of Assembly to protect the people’s interests, their rights, and ensure they do what they are supposed to do,” the Speaker said.
He also highlighted Lagos as a mini-Nigeria and expressed hope that the peace currently enjoyed in the state would be sustained under the military’s watch.
Dr. Obasa commended Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his policies, which he said have contributed to the economic and socio-political growth of the state. He further praised the gallantry of military personnel, particularly those fighting insecurity in the Northeast, for their dedication to Nigeria’s safety and stability.
In his remarks, Brigadier General Oyekola said his visit aimed to foster closer relations with the Assembly, noting that the army’s role is to protect the residents of Lagos. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the peaceful status of the state, which he described as exemplary.
Returning to Lagos after 20 years, General Oyekola emphasized that the Army serves as the third layer of security in the country, following the Nigeria Police Force. He called for continued support from Lagosians to ensure the Army can effectively carry out its duties.
“Wearing this uniform does not make us different from the people. We are first civilians before becoming men in uniforms,” Oyekola stated.
Brigadier General Oyekola took command of the 9 Brigade in Ikeja on August 21, 2024, following his tenure as Chief of Staff at the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI.
