Lagos Assembly probes MDAs’ financial activities for 2023

The Lagos State House of Assembly has initiated a comprehensive review of the financial activities of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) for the year 2023, as detailed in a report compiled by the state Auditor-General.

Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts for State, Hon. Kehinde Joseph, disclosed this during a briefing, emphasizing that the exercise aims to ensure transparency, accountability, and adherence to constitutional provisions, rather than serving as a witch-hunt.

“We are committed to ensuring transparency, accountability, and probity in the management of public funds and resources,” Hon. Joseph stated.

The review covers the financial period from January 1 to December 31, 2023, with the committee expected to present its findings to the Assembly for further action.

Hon. Joseph explained that the exercise would involve scrutinizing the economic activities of all MDAs to ascertain the completion, accuracy, and reliability of their financial transactions. Specific areas of focus include:

Fixed asset registers

Unretired payment vouchers

Abandoned projects

Unreceipted payment vouchers

Non-compliance with financial regulations

Redundant agencies

The committee will also assess compliance with financial regulations, legislation, and accounting standards, while examining revenue and budget performance.

According to Hon. Joseph, the heads of MDAs flagged in the Auditor-General’s report will be invited to provide clarifications on queries raised. This step is aimed at promoting accountability and efficiency in public financial management.

Hon. Joseph reiterated the Assembly’s dedication to meeting public expectations and upholding good governance. He acknowledged the high expectations from the electorate and stressed that the Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, is committed to building on existing foundations for the state’s development.

“We cannot afford to disappoint our electorate,” he concluded.
