Lagos Assembly summons LASIEC over 2025 council elections

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have called on the leadership of the State’s Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to appear before them to explain how far they have gone in the planning of the 2025 local government elections.
The lawmakers summoned the LASIEC leadership on Thursday after a motion moved under ‘Urgent Public Importance’ by the Chairman House Committee on LASIEC, Judiciary and Public Petitions, Hon. Ladi Ajomale.
Ajomale lamented that he was not aware of the activities of LASIEC despite being the House Chairman, saying that it ought not to be so.
He stated that LASIEC seems to be in haste in conducting the election, adding that the election guidelines were not explicit enough to ascertain July 12 would be appropriate for the conduct of the elections.
The lawmakers complained that residents have been asking him of how the election would be conducted, adding that he could not give accurate answer because he was not enlightened enough about the planning of the elections.
He added that he was not aware whether the body had hired adhoc staff for the election.
He said that there was need to invite the LASIEC leadership to brief the House on what their plans are for the election.
Supporting the motion, Hon. Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 2), said that there is need for the leadership of the LASIEC to appear before the House, since the Commission was a creation of the House of Assembly.
He added that the Commission should come to explain how monies have been spent so far since the monies were tax payers money.
Joseph said that there was no enough public enlightenment on the election, adding that many Lagos residents were not aware of the forthcoming local government elections.
Other lawmakers including Hon. Solomon Bonu (Badagry 1), Hon. Owolabi Ajani (Mainland 1) and Hon. Stephen Ogundipe (Oshodi/Isolo 1) spoke in support of the motion.
However, the Speaker of the House, Rt (Hon) Mudashiru Obasa, backed the motion, saying that there was need to hear from the Commission on what they have done and how far they have gone in the planning of the elections.
He therefore directed the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, to write the Commission on the decision of the House.
