Lagos begins allocation of 180 shops to traders in Alabarago

The Lagos State Government has begun allocating 180 newly constructed shops at the redeveloped Alabarago Transnational Market, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive urban renewal and economic empowerment under the THEMES Plus agenda.
Speaking at the handover of allocation letters on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS, Mr. Babatunde Olajide, said the project reflects Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s pledge to modernise markets while protecting the interests of existing traders.
Olajide explained that the Alabarago project is part of a wider plan to redevelop 21 markets across the state, including Katangowa, Pelewura, and Jankara.
He added that the project was delivered through collaboration among several state agencies and partners, including the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency, Ministry of Finance, Office of Public-Private Partnerships, and United Bank for Africa (UBA).
According to Olajide, the allocation of shops was conducted transparently and strictly for Alabarago traders, as publicly advertised. He noted that the 180 shops are spread across three completed blocks, with additional blocks still under construction.
Olajide disclosed that beneficiaries are required to pay between 25 and 100 per cent of the shop value, explaining that early payment within the six-month window attracts no interest and reduces financial exposure.
The Chairman of the Alabarago Central Committee Association, Mr. Husseini Mohamed, described the allocation as historic, while appreciating the government for transparency and inclusion.
Olajide also urged traders to maintain cleanliness and order, warning against roadside trading and improper waste disposal, and assured that work is ongoing to ensure the smooth relocation of traders into the market.
