The Lagos State Government is set to begin the controlled demolition of the distressed Great Nigeria Insurance House on Lagos Island, with the exercise scheduled to commence on Thursday, October 15, 2026.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the demolition was approved following structural assessments by relevant agencies, which established that the building posed a significant threat to public safety.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the operation would be carried out professionally and in line with global best practices to safeguard lives and property.

The agency said the immediate surroundings would be cordoned off, with access restricted and temporary traffic diversions introduced on adjoining streets. Residents, traders and businesses in the area were also warned to expect some noise and dust during the exercise.

LASEMA advised residents, traders and motorists to avoid the affected area where possible, use alternative routes and comply with safety instructions and diversion signs.

It added that it would collaborate with other state agencies to coordinate safety measures and ensure the demolition was conducted without endangering the public.
