Lagos commends peaceful protest, announces measures to alleviate hardship

The Lagos State Government on Thursday commended the peaceful conduct of Lagosians during protests across the state.
In a statement by Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, it was noted however, that many businesses were closed due to fear of unrest.
Omotoso stated, “We have observed a slowdown in business activities in some parts of the state, likely due to concerns that hooligans and anarchists might disrupt the peace. Fortunately, that did not happen. By and large, Lagosians chose to embrace peace and avoid destruction while expressing their views and exercising their constitutional right to protest.”
Addressing the key message of the protest—hunger in the land—Omotoso assured that the Federal Government is taking steps to address the situation. He highlighted measures such as the opening of the National Grains Reserve and the suspension of import duties on food items, which are expected to alleviate the current food shortage and reduce prices. The state government plans to work with food distributors to ensure these benefits reach citizens.
While disclosing the return of the popular Sunday Markets, offering a 25 percent discount on major food items, he added that the Medical Outreach, which provided free treatment to thousands, will also resume.
“We are finalizing the logistics for its implementation. We will continue to ensure that all expectant women enjoy free delivery in our hospitals. The 25% fare reduction on all our transport facilities will continue, along with other measures to relieve Lagosians during these challenging times,” he said.
Calling for an end to the protests, Omotoso stated, “Considering all the Federal and State Governments have done, it is time for the protesters to call off their action. Their voice has been heard loud and clear.”
He also praised the professional conduct of the security agencies, including the Lagos State Police Command, the Department of State Services, the Military, the Civil Defence, Neighbourhood Watch, Community leaders, Religious leaders, and Resident Associations, for maintaining peace.
Omotoso concluded by affirming that the Lagos State Government will continue to engage all stakeholders to ensure the state remains peaceful and a beacon of hope for all.
