The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Tijani Fatai, has warned police personnel against brutality, unlawful arrests, extortion and intimidation of citizens, declaring that misconduct will attract disciplinary sanctions.

Fatai gave the warning during a general lecture for officers and men of the Lagos State Police Command at POWA Hall, GRA, Ikeja, on Thursday, October 22, 2026, in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

He charged officers to uphold professionalism, respect human rights, ensure accountability and operate within the confines of the law.

Fataj also warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for the conduct of personnel under their command.

The police commissioner specifically cautioned tactical teams against abusing their operational responsibilities to harass, intimidate or exploit members of the public. He further directed strict compliance with the Nigeria Police Force’s social media policy, warning that violations would attract appropriate sanctions.

On cultism and criminal investigations, Fatai stressed that all arrests must follow due process, ruling out arrest by proxy and detention without lawful justification. He also directed officers to ensure the humane treatment, safety and welfare of suspects in custody.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the CP urged personnel to remain politically neutral, monitor electioneering activities and provide adequate security to maintain peace and public order.

He further charged officers to demonstrate integrity and impartiality in the discharge of their duties, noting that public confidence in the police depends on responsible conduct, accountability and respect for citizens’ rights.
