Lagos Deputy Governor urges students to adopt growth mindset for innovation

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has encouraged secondary school students to embrace a growth mindset, emphasizing that intelligence can be developed through effort, learning, and persistence. He urged them to cultivate innovation and adaptability to thrive in today’s technology-driven world.

Hamzat gave the charge on Tuesday at an event titled “A Day with the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Hamzat” and the launch of a mentorship program for secondary school students. The event, themed “Innovate – EkoSTEAM Mentorship Series,” was organized by the Lagos State Government to expose students to opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). The program was held at Ikeja Senior High School, Ikeja.

Represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule, Hamzat stressed the importance of a mindset that encourages problem-solving and critical thinking. He highlighted that the future of STEAM depends on students’ ability to embrace cutting-edge technology and think creatively.

“Innovation begins with curiosity. I encourage you to question the status quo and take bold steps toward generating novel solutions to contemporary challenges,” Hamzat stated. He assured students of the Lagos State Government’s continued commitment to their development, ensuring they are well-equipped to excel in an evolving technological landscape.

Hamzat noted that technological advancements, particularly in Artificial Intelligence (AI), are transforming various STEAM disciplines. He explained that art is now being reshaped by digital platforms, generative design algorithms, and virtual reality experiences, further broadening opportunities for creative expression.

He further emphasized AI’s role in revolutionizing industries such as healthcare, agriculture, and education. “AI algorithms are analyzing medical images with a level of accuracy that rivals experienced radiologists. Smart sensors and machine learning are optimizing irrigation and crop management in agriculture, while AI-driven platforms personalize learning experiences, making education more accessible than ever before,” he said.

Earlier, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Basic and Secondary Education, Eniola Opeyemi, underscored the importance of research in fostering innovation. He highlighted the Lagos State Government’s investment in education as a means to cultivate the next generation of innovators. He also stressed the need for a collaborative approach between educators, students, and policymakers to create a supportive environment for STEAM exploration.

A key highlight of the event was a student-centric panel session, where enthusiastic students engaged in open discussions with the Deputy Governor. The dialogue covered critical issues in STEAM education, such as inclusivity, technology’s role in enhancing learning, and strategies to promote creativity and entrepreneurship in schools.
