Lagos extends free hypertension, diabetes screening campaign
The Lagos State Government has announced a two-week extension to its free hypertension and diabetes screening campaign, “Know Your Numbers, Control Your Numbers,” which will now run until Sunday, November 17, 2024.
The campaign, which was initially set to end on November 3, offers free health screenings across over 330 designated sites, including 30 General Hospitals and 300 Primary Health Centres throughout the state.
Prof. Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, made the announcement today, encouraging residents to utilize the additional time to undergo the essential screenings.
“By extending this campaign, we hope to reach even more Lagosians and empower them to ‘know their numbers’—their blood pressure and blood sugar levels—to take proactive steps in managing these silent killers,” he said.
Hypertension and diabetes, both of which have a significant impact on the health system, are major contributors to the disease burden in Nigeria. Prof. Abayomi highlighted the importance of early detection and intervention in reducing the risk of severe complications, such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.
The campaign is part of the national ’10 Million Project,’ an initiative launched by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, in collaboration with the Commissioners for Health Forum, which aims to screen 10 million Nigerians for hypertension and diabetes. Launched on October 28, 2024, the initiative has already seen thousands of Lagos residents participate in the screenings.
As part of the campaign’s launch, key government officials, including Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, and members of the State Executive Council, participated in the screenings, underscoring the importance of health checks.
The special screening event, held during an Executive Council meeting, also included notable figures such as the Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, and Members of the House of Representatives, Honourable Babajimi Benson and Honourable Fuad Laguda.
With the extension, screenings will continue daily from 9 a.m. at the designated sites across all Local Government Areas in Lagos. These sites are strategically placed to ensure accessibility for all residents.
Prof. Abayomi reiterated that hypertension and diabetes are among the leading causes of death and disability globally and emphasized the state’s commitment to reducing preventable hospitalizations through proactive health management. “Knowing your blood pressure and blood sugar levels is the first step in managing these conditions,” he said.
Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, also urged Lagosians to take advantage of the extended period, noting that the campaign provides an invaluable opportunity for residents to assess their health status at no cost. “Routine checks are essential, especially for those aged 40 and above or those with a family history of these conditions,” she said.
She encouraged residents to adopt healthier lifestyles, including regular exercise, balanced diets, and stress management, to reduce the risks associated with hypertension and diabetes. “Taking charge of your health is a commitment to a better future,” Dr. Ogunyemi added.
The Lagos State Government also expressed gratitude to healthcare professionals and partners involved in the campaign and called on community leaders, religious organizations, and local influencers to help spread awareness and encourage participation in the screening initiative.
