Lagos FRSC launches ‘Operation GUDUMA’, arrests 292 over fake number plates

The Lagos Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced “Operation GUDUMA,” a special enforcement exercise targeted at curbing the illegal use of fake diplomatic number plates and addressing the persistent issue of overloading across Lagos State.
The operation, which is being carried out simultaneously in eleven states across the country, began on Monday, May 18, 2026, and is expected to end on Friday, May 22, 2026.
The exercise was officially flagged off on behalf of the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, by the Assistant Corps Marshal in charge of Motor Vehicle Administration, ACM Adetunji Oki.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony held at the FRSC Lagos Sector Command headquarters, Oki praised the Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, for his professionalism, dedication, and commitment to effective road safety administration.
Oki reiterated the directive of the Corps Marshal on the ongoing “Operation Guduma: Total War Against Fake Diplomatic Number Plates and Overloading,” stressing that the increasing cases of insecurity, road crashes, fatalities, and destruction of property linked to such offences remain unacceptable.
He further clarified that the FRSC remains the only agency authorized to produce and issue approved number plates for recognized government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), warning motorists against the use of fake and unauthorized number plates bearing inscriptions such as Ambassador, NANS, NYCN, EYC-AMB, and Agenda 63, among others.
According to the command, offenders found using such illegal number plates would be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted accordingly.
The FRSC disclosed that a total of 292 offenders had been arrested so far, while 143 vehicles were impounded and 149 illegal number plates and related items confiscated during the operation.
