Lagos generates $71.6 million from tourism, hospitality, entertainment during ‘Detty December’

Lagos State has reaffirmed its status as Africa’s tourism and entertainment capital with an impressive revenue generation of $71.6 million during the 2024 ‘Detty December’ season.
The revenue was derived from the tourism, hospitality, and entertainment sectors, according to a report by MO Africa Consulting.
Hotels accounted for $44 million of the revenue, while short-let apartments contributed $13 million, highlighting the state’s immense economic potential as a premier destination city.
The figures were disclosed over the weekend by Mr. Idris Aregbe, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, in a statement titled ‘Lagos State Detty December 2024/2025 Report.’
The ‘Detty December’ season featured a variety of events that showcased Lagos as a vibrant hub for culture and entertainment. Among the highlights were the Mrs. Universe Africa pageant, Greater Lagos Fiesta, Spotify Wrapped Concert, Rhythm Unplugged, Lagos Countdown, African Fashion Week, and The La Vida Experience. These events drew locals, members of the Nigerian diaspora—popularly known as IJGBs (I Just Got Back)—and international tourists.
In addition to boosting the economy, the season celebrated Nigerian arts, culture, and music on a global stage. Events such as culinary exhibitions, fashion shows, and cultural displays reinforced Lagos’ status as a global cultural destination, fostering community spirit and strengthening ties with the diaspora.
Mr. Aregbe credited the success of the season to the visionary leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.
He emphasized their commitment to fostering growth in tourism and culture, which has laid a solid foundation for Lagos’ achievements in the sector.
“Tourism remains a vital driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos State,” Aregbe said. “The ‘Ember’ season represents unity, vibrancy, and celebration, driven by the resilience and ingenuity of Lagosians.”
He also praised the role of artisans, entrepreneurs, and industry stakeholders, whose creativity and participation were instrumental in the season’s success.
Looking ahead to 2025, Lagos will launch the ‘Lagos Tourism is Rising’ campaign, focusing on building on the success of the 2024 season. Aregbe noted that the insights from ‘Detty December’ will be studied to improve future initiatives, create more opportunities for Lagosians, and further solidify the city’s reputation as a cultural and tourism hub.
Gratitude was extended to Lagosians, industry performers, and artisans for their contributions, as well as to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture for playing a pivotal role in ensuring the season’s success.
