Lagos honours 435 teachers, non-teaching staff after years of service

The Lagos State Government has honoured 435 retired and retiring teachers and non-teaching staff for their years of service and contributions to the state’s education sector.
The retirees were recognised at the 2026 retirees’ send-forth ceremony, where officials commended them for their dedication to educating children and supporting the administration and running of schools across the state.
In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Dr. Hakeem Babatunde Shittu, urged the retirees to pay greater attention to their health and prepare adequately for life after active service.
Shittu described retirement as a natural stage in every worker’s career, urging the retirees to see it as a new phase rather than the end of their contributions to society.
He also encouraged them to maintain contact with their former colleagues and remain engaged in activities that would allow them to share their knowledge and experience with others.
A permanent board member, Babatunde Williams, described the ceremony as a celebration of the retirees’ sacrifice, commitment and achievements, saying their years of work had contributed to the development of education in Lagos.
Williams said their experience remained valuable to the education sector and the wider society, adding that retirement from active service should not prevent them from continuing to contribute their knowledge and wisdom.
The guest speaker, Saheed Adewale Bashir, managing director of Meristem Stockbrokers Limited, represented by wealth management expert Imaobong Asemah, urged the retirees to plan financially, socially and emotionally for retirement, including through investments, health insurance and meaningful social activities.
