Lagos hosts Africa’s biggest esports tournament, strengthens continental leadership

Lagos has reinforced its position as Africa’s esports powerhouse with the successful hosting of GamrX 2025, the continent’s largest competitive gaming tournament.
The event, held at the Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, drew over 1,000 gamers from more than 13 African countries, competing in titles such as Street Fighter, Red Bull Kumite, EA FC, Mortal Kombat, PUBG Mobile, and Call of Duty Mobile for a multimillion-naira prize pool.
Thousands of spectators attended in person, while many more followed the action online, highlighting the surging popularity of competitive gaming across Africa.

Organised by Gamr Africa in partnership with the Lagos State Sports Commission, the tournament aligned with Lagos’s strategy to expand its digital sports economy. Projections indicate the city could generate up to $7.9 million in esports revenue by 2029 and attract over $30 million in investments within five years.
Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr Lekan Fatodu, described Lagos as “a global reference point in the promotion of diverse sports” and commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his vision in using sports as a tool for economic growth and youth engagement.
GamrX 2025 also promoted inclusivity by encouraging female participation and showcasing African game developers whose creations merge local storytelling with international appeal.
With Africa’s gaming market expected to exceed $10 billion by 2033, Lagos is positioning itself as a continental leader through infrastructure development, talent cultivation, and strategic global partnerships.
The success of GamrX 2025 reaffirms Lagos’s role as a hub for innovation, competition, and investment in Africa’s rapidly expanding esports industry.
