Lagos impounds 926 vehicles for one-way driving, other traffic offences

The Lagos State Government, through its Central Business District (CBD), announced on Thursday that it had impounded 926 vehicles and 33 tricycles for violating traffic regulations.

The vehicles were seized for offences such as obstructing traffic, illegal parking, making illegal U-turns, and driving against traffic (one-way driving)—all of which contribute to persistent gridlock along the CBD axis.

According to the government, the enforcement exercise was aimed at maintaining law and order within the state’s commercial corridors and serving as a deterrent to habitual traffic law violators.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on CBD, Bola Lawal, disclosed this during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja, to mark Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.

Lawal also revealed that three individuals were arrested for assaulting CBD operatives during enforcement operations. She affirmed the state’s zero-tolerance stance on violence against law enforcement personnel and confirmed that the offenders have been prosecuted in line with state laws.

Highlighting the agency’s achievements in the past year, Lawal noted progress in the rebranding and beautification of various areas within the state’s business districts, as well as the promotion of traffic safety awareness campaigns.

“The agency has continued to rebrand, beautify, paint, restructure, and remodel the business districts to meet international standards and attract investors. Handrails and guardrails installed in places like Apongbon, CMS, and Idumota are being maintained, while new ones are being installed at Inner Marina/Leventis and Broad Street in the Lagos Island Business District,” she said.

Lawal added that these projects are intended to prevent pedestrians from crossing roads at unauthorized and hazardous points and to discourage traders from encroaching on roadways with their goods.
