Lagos launches Biometric Athlete Portal, unveils comprehensive sports reforms

The Lagos State Sports Commission has launched a new Athlete Portal integrated with biometric identification technology, as part of a broader reform agenda to reposition the sports ecosystem in the state. The initiative is aimed at identifying, monitoring, and supporting athletic talents while promoting transparency and innovation in athlete management.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Commission’s Conference Room, Director General, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, emphasized the importance of data, accountability, and grassroots development in driving sustainable sports growth. He described the portal as a major step toward establishing a central database for performance tracking and athlete development.

Accessible via https://lssc.lg.gov.ng/athlete-registration/, the portal will allow athletes to register, be biometrically profiled, and have their careers monitored in real time. Physical registration exercises will also be conducted to ensure inclusive access for athletes from underserved communities.

As part of the reforms, the Commission introduced the Team Lagos Reform and Transition Policy, designed to create transparent processes for athlete and coach onboarding. The policy includes fair appeal mechanisms, as well as protocols for retention, disengagement, and probation to promote accountability within Team Lagos structures.

To support implementation, the Commission has established a Team Lagos Monitoring Unit (TLMU) under the Office of the Director General and appointed a Sports Officer to serve as the Athletes’ Liaison Officer. These structures will oversee athlete welfare, performance evaluation, and complaint resolution.

Mr. Fatodu also reaffirmed the dissolution of the former Lagos State Senior Team, warning that no individual or group is authorized to represent the state under that title. However, exceptional athletes from the dissolved team who have demonstrated consistent excellence will be given special consideration under the new framework.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Bolaji Ogunlende, described the initiative as a game-changer in sports administration. He stated that the state government remains committed to youth empowerment through infrastructure development, talent nurturing, and inclusive sporting programmes.

The Commission further announced the commencement of the Team Lagos Open Trials 2025 across all IBILE divisions, aimed at identifying fresh talent and ensuring continued participation across the state. The press conference was attended by key officials, including Mr. Damilare Orimoloye (SSA on Sports), Mr. Opeyemi Adu (SSA on Sports Marketing), and senior members of the Commission.
