Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said the acquisition of 24 new coaches for the Red Line Rail by the Lagos State Government will enhance the state’s multimodal transportation system and provide relief for commuters.
He also disclosed that discussions are ongoing to extend the Red Line into Ogun State, noting that the expansion aligns with Lagos’ broader transport master plan covering rail, road and waterways.
Speaking with State House correspondents at Lagos House, Marina, on Wednesday, the governor explained that the new trains for the Red Line would consist of eight cars, compared to the four-car configuration currently in use on the Blue Line.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the upgrade is designed to support operations along the 27-kilometre corridor from Oyingbo to Agbado, with plans to run up to 37 trips daily.
He added that the Red Line is expected to transport over 500,000 passengers daily when it becomes fully operational.
The governor further revealed that the Omi-Eko water transport project is progressing, with high-capacity electric boats expected to be introduced by 2027 to boost ferry services.
Additionally, Sanwo-Olu indicated that the integration of rail, road and water transport is aimed at ensuring efficient movement of people while supporting economic growth and improving productivity across the state.
The APC chieftain also recalled that additional rolling stock had earlier been procured for the Blue Line, adding that similar investments in the Red Line would further strengthen Lagos State’s rail infrastructure.
