Lagos rolls out packed Detty December calendar, showcasing sports excellence

The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has unveiled a packed “Detty December” calendar, a series of sporting and entertainment events designed to showcase the state’s excellence and attract both local and international attention during the festive season.

According to a statement by the commission, the initiative aims to project Lagos as a vibrant hub for sports and entertainment, appealing to tourists, foreigners, and members of the Nigerian diaspora.

The commission noted that the comprehensive schedule reflects the Lagos State Government’s commitment to transforming December festivities into a world-class celebration. It highlighted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration is leveraging state-of-the-art facilities such as the Rowe Park Olympic-size swimming pool and the Mobolaji Johnson Arena to position Lagos as Africa’s premier destination for sporting excellence.

It revealed that the calendar features a mix of LSSC-endorsed programmes and major events hosted across Lagos, including the Lagos Grand Horse Race, the Detty December Marathon at Eko Atlantic City, and high-profile boxing events such as Chaos in the Ring. The commission stated that all events are set to take place in the state’s world-class venues, demonstrating Lagos’ capability to host international-standard sporting spectacles.

Speaking on the initiative, LSSC Director-General Lekan Fatodu said the governor had mandated the commission to elevate Lagos to global prominence in “sportainment”—the combination of sport and entertainment. He described the December lineup as a bold step towards achieving that vision.

Fatodu added, “We are orchestrating a paradigm shift in how the world perceives Lagos and Nigeria. Every international visitor, every diaspora returnee, every tourist who experiences the events in our facilities, our impeccable organisation skills, and our warm hospitality becomes an ambassador for the Lagos story.”

The commission noted that the curated programmes are intended to enhance sports tourism, elevate visitor experiences, and reinforce Lagos’ reputation as a leading destination for festive-season activities across Africa.

It added that by combining adrenaline-pumping events like horse racing and marathons with high-profile boxing fixtures, the “Detty December” calendar reflects a new approach to showcasing the state’s vibrant culture and sporting potential.
