Lagos seals illegal buildings in Ikoyi, Lekki, Obalende

The Lagos State Government has sealed multiple illegal construction sites across Obalende, Ikoyi, and Lekki as part of its ongoing enforcement against unauthorized developments.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, led the enforcement operation on Thursday, stressing the government’s determination to curb illegal constructions and ensure compliance with state physical planning laws.

Expressing concern over the increasing disregard for building regulations, Olumide condemned the practice of erecting structures without government-approved plans or carrying out renovations without permits.

He emphasized that such actions undermine Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, particularly efforts to develop a 21st-century economy in Lagos.

“I implore all property owners and developers in the state, particularly those intending to carry out construction or renovation work, to obtain the necessary approvals and permits from the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA),” Olumide stated. “Unpermitted development and renovation will no longer be tolerated.”

Among the affected sites were properties on Rummens Road and Bourdillon Road in Ikoyi, as well as Wole Olateju Crescent, Ogbunike Street, and Hilary Onikogu Crescent in Lekki Phase I. Several structures in Obalende were also sealed for non-compliance.

Olumide urged residents to report unauthorized developments to help the government detect and address violations early, ensuring the state’s urban growth aligns with regulatory standards.

Joining the Commissioner on the enforcement exercise were Tpl. Daisi Oso, General Manager of the Lagos State Planning and Environmental Monitoring Agency (LASPEMA), and officials from LASPPPA’s Monitoring and Compliance Unit, who also identified and sealed illegal structures in informal spaces within the affected areas.
