Lagos set to deploy 9MW in first phase of Iju-Akute power project
The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to strengthen electricity supply to critical water infrastructure with the ongoing development of a 26-megawatt (MW) embedded power project for the Iju-Akute Waterworks.
Key stakeholders recently inspected power-generating equipment supplied by Jubaili Bros Nigeria for the Akute Independent Power Project (IPP), being developed by Agrigate Utilities Limited to provide dedicated electricity to the waterworks.
The inspection was carried out ahead of the delivery and deployment of equipment for the first phase of the project, which is expected to generate 9MW, while subsequent phases will increase the total generation capacity to 26MW.
Speaking during the inspection, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, underscored the strategic importance of the project to the state’s water infrastructure and urged stakeholders to ensure its timely and successful delivery.
Ogunleye stressed the need for accountability, collaboration, adherence to specifications and compliance with agreed timelines, noting that reliable electricity supply was essential to the effective operation of critical public infrastructure.
The Chief Executive Officer of Agrigate Utilities Limited, Olufemi Bakare, expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government, project partners and other stakeholders for their support, reaffirming the company’s commitment to delivering the project within the agreed timeframe and providing technical support for its sustainable operation.
Representing Jubaili Bros Nigeria, the Head of Commercial, Mohammed Farhat, and General Manager, Ahmed Dahshi, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supplying the required equipment and technical services. The General Manager of the Lagos State Electrification Agency, Engr. K.A.T. Balogun, also participated in the inspection alongside other senior state officials.
The project is expected to provide dedicated electricity to the Iju-Akute Waterworks, supporting the state’s efforts to improve the reliability and sustainability of essential water services. Arrangements are being advanced for the delivery, installation and deployment of equipment for the first phase.
