Lagos Speaker dismisses rumors of governorship ambition at 2025 budget presentation

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has dispelled speculation about his alleged governorship ambition, asserting that his primary focus remains on strengthening the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Speaking on Thursday after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the 2025 budget proposal tagged “Budget of Sustainability,” Obasa clarified that his efforts to mobilize support for the party have been misconstrued by detractors as a personal political strategy.

“My concern is about building our party. Whatever we do is mainly for this cause,” the Speaker stated, adding, “Becoming governor is secondary; it is something I have not given serious consideration.”

Obasa also addressed rumors that he sought validation from his extended family in Ojo to bolster his political aspirations, firmly denying the claims. He reaffirmed his commitment to Agege, his constituency, as the foundation of his political journey.

Sanwo-Olu’s 2025 Budget Proposal

Governor Sanwo-Olu presented a proposed budget of ₦3.006 trillion, reflecting a 30% increase from the 2024 allocation. The budget comprises a total revenue projection of ₦2.597 trillion, with a deficit financing of ₦409 billion. It allocates ₦1.239 trillion (41%) to recurrent expenditure and ₦1.766 trillion (59%) to capital projects.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized the budget’s alignment with Lagos’ strategic vision for sustainable development, stating it will drive economic growth and improve infrastructure.

In his remarks, Obasa expressed optimism about the state’s financial outlook despite prevailing economic difficulties. He urged Lagosians to remain hopeful, citing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s plans for national economic recovery.

The Speaker also assured that the Assembly would thoroughly review the budget to ensure it addresses the socio-economic needs of Lagos residents.

“While this House supports the present administration, we remain independent and resolute. We will not compromise our duty to protect the interests of Lagosians,” Obasa emphasized.

During the plenary session, members of the Assembly passed a vote of confidence in Obasa, commending his leadership. The Speaker reciprocated with gratitude, pledging continued unity and dedication among lawmakers to achieve the state’s developmental goals.

Obasa concluded by urging party members to rally behind the APC as the state prepares for the 2027 elections, highlighting his efforts to mobilize support through the party’s Mandate platform.

“We will not let Lagosians down. Together, we will fulfill the mandate entrusted to us and take Lagos to greater heights,” Obasa assured.

The Lagos Assembly is expected to commence detailed deliberations on the 2025 budget proposal in the coming weeks.
