Lagos Speaker Obasa celebrates 52nd birthday with school children

…awards N5 million to student victim of police incident

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, celebrated his upcoming 52nd birthday on Friday with students from various schools across the state, emphasizing the importance of education and warning against social vices.

Held at Oyewole Primary School in Agege, the event featured Dr. Obasa presenting cash rewards to outstanding students from all 20 local government areas and six educational districts of Lagos.

He urged the children to focus on their studies and avoid negative influences, sharing his own journey as inspiration. “This was my school,” Obasa said. “As a child, I never thought I would be where I am today. Be confident, work hard, and know that your potential is limitless.”

He encouraged students to avoid crime and peer pressure, especially cautioning young girls against making poor choices for material gain. “You are the future, and I hope one day you will inspire others as we are here to inspire you,” he added.

Support for Student Injured by Police Incident

One of the event’s highlights was the presentation of a N5 million donation to Aminat Alege, a 12-year-old student injured in February 2024 when she was accidentally hit in the eye by a teargas canister discharged by a police officer.

The funds, contributed by members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, were given to Aminat’s family to help cover her educational needs following the incident.

Presenting the cheque, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa II) expressed the Speaker’s concern for Aminat and explained that lawmakers decided to support her family after hearing their appeal. In addition to the financial aid, Aminat received a scholarship to ensure her continued education.

Other Educational Contributions

In further support of education, the lawmakers donated 15 computers to three local schools—Oyewole Primary School, Thomas Aquinas School, and Royal Apple School.

Two students also received scholarships for excelling in a current affairs competition held during the event. Ishola Moyinoluwa of Ikeja Junior High School won first place, while Isiaka Bashar Ayomiposi of Eko Junior College came second. Both were awarded scholarships by Babatunde Johnson, chairman of Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area.

Mr. Johnson commended Speaker Obasa, describing him as “a leader who has greatly contributed to the community.” Hon. Noheem Adams, Majority Leader of the House, noted that Obasa’s efforts had brought extensive development to Agege, making him a source of pride in the area.

Tutor-General Adekanye Oladele praised Obasa’s dedication to education, vowing that students would continue to make Lagos proud through their achievements.
