Lagos Sports Commission, UNILAG partner on hosting 2026 National Intermediate Games

The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have begun high-level consultations as Lagos intensifies preparations to host the 2026 National Intermediate Games for Under-18 athletes.

A delegation from the LSSC, led by its Director-General, Mr Lekan Fatodu, paid a courtesy visit to UNILAG, where they were received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Foluso Lesi, at the Senate Building. The meeting brought together senior officials of the commission and members of the UNILAG Sports Council.

Discussions at the meeting focused on collaboration and strategic planning aimed at delivering a world-class sporting event in line with Lagos State’s vision for sports development and youth engagement.

Lagos State has in recent years hosted several major sporting events that attracted participants from within and outside the country. These include Game X, the Festival of Table Tennis, the African Senior Fencing Championship, the Zen Archery Lagos International Open, and the Africa School Games, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a leading hub for sports promotion in Nigeria and Africa.

At the end of the meeting, both parties agreed to set up joint working teams and timelines to ensure effective coordination ahead of the Games.

The move is expected to support Lagos State’s ambition to deliver a well-organised, athlete-centred National Intermediate Games that will contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s sports development pipeline.
